چکیده

Abrading decreases the strength of glass at these low temperatures in the same wayas at higher temperatures. Lowering the test temperature increases the strength, up to a point, of both abraded and unabraded specimens. The breaking stress at 194°K and 296 K is dependent on the rate of loading but appears to be independent of the rate at 20 0 K and 76°K. Contact with liquid nitrogen and hydrogen does not appear to affect adversely the breaking stress. The fatigue or endurance limit at 76°K appears to be greater than 9000 psi. However, since some of the specimens withstood loads of 10 000 psi for several

On the Radiative Equilibrium and Heat Balance of the Atmosphere

In order to incorporate the effect of radiation into the numerical experiment of the general circulation of the atmosphere, a simplified scheme for computing the radiative temperature change is constructed. The effects included are long wave radiation by water vapor, carbon dioxide, and ozone and the absorption of solar radiation by these three gases. The absorptivities of these gases are deter...

The effective electron mass in core-collapse supernovae

Finite temperature field theory is used to calculate the correction to the mass of the electron in plasma with finite temperature and arbitrary chemical potential, and the results are applied to the core regions of type II supernovae (SNe). It is shown that the effective electron mass varies between 1 MeV at the edge of the SN core up to 11 MeV near the center. This changed electron mass affect...

Determining the Leaf Emissivity of Three Crops by Infrared Thermometry

Plant temperature can provide important physiological information for crop management. Non-contact measurement with an infrared thermometer is useful for detecting leaf temperatures. In this study, a novel technique was developed to measure leaf emissivity using an infrared thermometer with an infrared sensor and a thermocouple wire. The measured values were transformed into true temperatures b...

Estimating variation in surface emissivities of intertidal macroalgae using an infrared thermometer and the effects on temperature measurements

Accurate measurements of surface temperatures with an infrared (IR) thermometer require input of the emissivities of the surfaces being measured; however, few determinations of the emissivities of intertidal organisms' surfaces have been made. Emissivities of intertidal macroalgae were measured to determine whether algal species, measurement angle, hydration, and layering affected them. Emissiv...
